The Liquid Gold Project
Is a Birmingham-based non-profit community outreach program. We strive to educate the general public on the role platelet donations play in saving the lives of children with leukemia, cancer, burn, and trauma patients and those awaiting open-heart surgeries.

We are committed explicitly to increasing platelet donations through education and community involvement and has received written endorsements from major hospitals in the Birmingham area

(i.e., UAB, St. Vincent's, Children's Hospital, and Baptist Health Systems), as well as blood collection agencies (i.e., Red Cross and Life South).

Don Pierini, the founder of the Liquid Gold Foundation,
Don can personally attest to the fact that blood platelets DO save lives. He was diagnosed with leukemia during the summer of
2008.

Don, had a condition that went undiagnosed, requiring admittance into the emergency room of St. Vincent's Hospital. Don was hospitalized in isolation from July through September 2008. A summertime shortage of platelet collections almost resulted in his passing while receiving a steady regiment of blood transfusions, "exotic" antibiotics, and chemo. At the last minute (midnight), he received the platelets he needed to keep him alive long enough to continue his treatments and later be "cured". The platelets represented the necessary hope to see this struggle through; provided hope to continue living.

Hence, the Liquid Gold Project's slogan is, "Where There Is Hope, There Is Life." Liquid Gold Project's logo is the anchor (for hope) and the anchor's chain in the shape of a heart (for Life).

our vision, our mission, our goal.

The Liquid Gold Projects is a grass-roots initiative focused on increasing platelet donations through education and opportunity. We want to regularly transform a one-time act of charity (donating platelets) into an ongoing cultural gift of providing Hope and Life to those in need.

Experts agree that the best way to increase platelet donations is through education. "To read is to forget, to speak is to remember, to do is to know."
The Liquid Gold Project will educate the community about the importance of blood platelet donations through churches, schools, and public service initiatives (supported by point-of-contact marketing, including brochures, wrist bands, shirts, and fliers ).

The community will have an opportunity to listen and speak to platelet recipients and learn about the life-saving importance of platelets in peoples' lives. We will then provide everyone the opportunity to donate platelets and experience the immediate impact of saving lives.

The Liquid Gold Project will strive to eliminate the shortage of blood platelets within the state of Alabama. The Liquid Gold Project, would also like to start a national initiative with similar expectations.

Take a look at how platelets saved this little girls life.

At the age of six, Liviya Anderson was rushed to the hospital. She was bleeding internally and needed an immediate transfusion of platelets to stop the bleeding and save her life. Thankfully, because of generous, volunteer donors, platelets – the clotting portion of blood – were available for Liviya. As doctors worked to treat her rare disease, Liviya received almost daily transfusions of blood and platelets over a period of three months to help keep her alive. Platelets must be used within five days of donation which means new donors are needed every day to help patients like Liviya.

OUR NAME, OUR LOGO, OUR SLOGAN

Picture
Name - In a brain-storming session with about 10 people sitting around a large conference room table, the following comments were made:
1. "Platelets look goldish in color"
2. "Platelets are more valuable than gold"
3. "Yes, they are liquid gold!"
You know how nick names can be -- some stick!

The Logo - The "Anchor" is the official symbol for "Hope"
The "Heart", which is created out of the anchors chain, symbolizes "life".
Slogan - For many cancer and trauma patients, whose lives hang in the balance by hours or days waiting for platelets to arrive, one unit of platelets represents "Hope"; hope that they will live long enough to receive the treatment they need to survive another day.
